The so-called "3 Day Diet" has been around since approximately 1985 and goes by several different names. However, lately it is the American Heart Association title that has garnered the most attention. The American Heart Association 3 Day Diet has a rather rigid menu to follow. The foods that are chosen are meant to boost up metabolism and burn fat quickly. They are also reported to rid the body of toxins, build muscle, and provide dieters with increased energy. Some of the main food choices selected are rather surprising, though, and can be rather high in sodium, fat, and sugar.

The idea of the American heart Association 3 Day Diet is to follow strict meal plans based on the theory that certain foods, eaten in appropriate combinations, will jump start a person's metabolic rate. The total number of calories to be eaten each day totals only around 1,000 to 1,200, and only three meals are permitted. There is no space in the diet for snacks, and the largest meal of the day seems to be dinner. A sample menu might possibly include crackers with cheese for breakfast, canned tuna on toast for lunch, and vanilla ice cream and cabbage for dinner. It also incorporates tea and coffee for a caffeine jolt meant to boost a person's metabolism.

Moreover, the diet now appears to have become the stuff of internet legend as there are versions of it widely known under a variety of names, including the Tuna Fish Diet, Baptist Hospital 3 day Diet, 3 day Navy Diet, 3 day Army Diet, Birmingham Cardiac Diet, Florida 3 Day Diet, American Heart Association Diet, Alabama 3 Day Diet, Hospital 3 Day Diet, and more.

However, there is a strong correspondence between the menu plans of these different versions so, for all intents and purposes, they can be treated as the same diet and comments applicable to one are substantially applicable to them all.

In summary, the 3 Day Cardiac Diet comprises menu plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner covering a period of three days. The daily calorie intake is about 1,000 calories, so much of the weight loss benefit is likely obtained by the restricted calorie intake, although some claim is made that the benefit is due to chemical reaction. Eating a low level of carbohydrates will also mean that water is lost from the body.

For the plan to produce results, it's important to keep hydration levels up by drinking plenty of water: 6-8 cups is recommended. This also aids digestion.

An important source of protein for the 3 day Cardiac diet is tuna. 1/2 cup of tuna is consumed on the first two days, increasing to 1 cup on the third day. Variety and nutrition is provided with small portions of vegetables, grapefruit, banana, cheese, eggs, crackers and toast. Coffee or tea is permitted with meals. Some concerns about this diet stem from the restricted levels of calories and nutrition. As the calories provided in this diet are so low, it's is likely that followers will feel hunger pangs and lower energy levels, especially by the third day. Vitamins and minerals are also low so that probably a multi vitamin supplement should be recommended as an additional source.

With only three small meals a day, your body may start to recognize that only a limited food supply is available and begin to compensate by reducing metabolism and energy levels to conserve fat reserves. This actually makes it harder to lose weight and, along with the feelings of hunger, places the body under additional stress.

The 3 Day Cardiac diet does not claim to be suitable for long term use and after 3 days you should follow a program that offers more variety in the content to provide the proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients that your body needs. More variety would also make it easier to follow this plan, as well as more enjoyable.

It is possible to follow a quick weight reduction plan that offers a more balanced and healthier range of foods. In particular, one which includes a technique known as calorie shifting and takes into account your own food preferences would be a good choice.

Following the 3 Day Cardiac Diet provides restricted calories and nutrients for its intended duration and the weight loss benefits come with some risk to health as well as bodily stress. Also, the diet is not a long term solution and any weight loss reduction could well be offset by food binging that results when your eating program returns to normal. The process can be easily done with the use of the probe and some water-soluble lubricant. The best places to start looking would be at the bottom right or left of the abdomen. It would greatly help if the mother knows how to look for the baby's back. That is where the heartbeat is the loudest.

Chronic non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, cancer, asthma, Type II diabetes, allergies, and stroke account for 60% of all deaths worldwide which is double the number of deaths from all infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria), maternal and perinatal conditions and nutritional deficiencies combined. Type 2 diabetes, also known as 'non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus' (NIDDM) or 'adult-onset diabetes', occurs when people produce insulin, but either do not make enough insulin, or their bodies do not use the insulin they produce. Although Type 2 diabetes commonly occurs in adults, an increasing number of children and adolescents who are overweight are also developing Type 2 diabetes and the cause for this is unknown. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of all deaths worldwide related to non-communicable diseases now occur in developing low and middle-income countries (WHO, Geneva, 2005).

This may be only partly true as our genotype is affected by our diet. The 'Barker hypothesis' formed in 1997 found a relationship between birth weight, subsequent growth and development, and the emergence of risk factors for chronic diseases. Since then numerous studies have shown that the associations are thought to be consequences of developmental plasticity, the phenomenon by which one genotype can give rise to a range of different physiological or morphological states in response to different environmental conditions during development. A recent study has shown that impaired growth in infancy and rapid childhood weight gain after age 2 years is related to an increased risk to develop cardiovascular events later in life confirms this hypothesis. These disorders related to it arise through a series of interactions between environmental influences and the pathways of growth and development that precede them. Modern day feeding of our children with modern diets encourages their rapid weight gain during the early years of development causing them to be increased to the risk of non-communicable diseases. Foods identified as having potential addictive properties include sweets, carbohydrates, fats, sweet/fat combinations, and possibly processed and/or high salt foods.

It is widely accepted that chronic non-communicable diseases are largely due to preventable and modifiable risk factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, tobacco use and inappropriate use of alcohol. The increase in body weight during infancy and childhood along with excess body weight throughout life and obesity is associated with an increased risk of diseases. This increase in body weight is common as we age therefore excess body weight should not be measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is the recommended universal criterion of overweight and obesity. BMI changes with age and level of activity as muscle and fat have different mass and contribute differently to BMI. The recent headlines has been: "Obesity Reduces Risk Of Cardiac Death" but this is misleading as the study measured BMI and risk of sudden cardiac death in a group of people already predisposed to heart problems. Waist-to-height ratio has been found to be a better predictive value for risk of cardiovascular events. Processed foods have been shown to be responsible for increase in waistline of our modern populations. Even though most of these studies were done to correlate BMI as an indicator of risk, they are still valid for the connection between consumption of processed foods and risk of obesity. For instance, a new study showed that relatively small lifestyle modifications related to weight reduction, physical activity and diet can decrease the risk of Type 2 diabetes in male smokers. Interestingly, no association was found between consumption of red meat, poultry and the risk of Type 2 diabetes but the reduction of the consumption of processed meat did indicate a risk of this disease.

In context with weight gain, another factor that contributes to increased risk of non-communicable diseases is physical inactivity. This is associated with increased levels of obesity, breast cancer, colon cancer, osteoporosis, stress, anxiety and depression. Physical inactivity is one of the major underlying causes of mortality in the world. It has been shown that moderate amounts of physical activity (frequency, duration and intensity) are associated with health benefits, and can help reduce various chronic diseases related to lifestyle. The urbanised lifestyle such as use of tobacco is one of the most modifiable risk factors and preventable causes of death for non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes some 10 million deaths each year by 2020 to tobacco. It is estimated that by 2030 smoking will kill one in six people globally, if current trends continue. This will include seven million people in developing countries. Tobacco use has been associated with premature mortality amongst users, with cardiovascular disease (i.e. stroke and heart attack) causing most deaths. This is closely followed by chronic lung diseases, such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer.

In conclusion, diet and nutrition is a major modifiable determinant of chronic non communicable diseases, with scientific evidence supporting the view that alterations in diet and activity have effects on health throughout life. Non-communicable diseases are linked to high consumption of energy dense foods, made of animal origin and of foods processed or prepared with added fat, sugar and salt. So why do we continue to consume these foods? Do we lack the knowledge that these foods are disease causing? This cannot be possible as we are constantly being bombarded by health organisations that processed foods are bad for us and we should eat as naturally as possible. Does the fault lie in our governments? Are they doing enough to reduce the consumption of processed foods in our society? In 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration indicated that around 10000 new processed foods are introduced every year and since then the processed food industry has boomed. The problem is these newly introduced processed foods are labelled with "low in fat, low in salt, low in sugar, no trans-fats, completely natural" which the consumer readily accepts. Just because the label indicates this, it is not the whole truth.

(By the way, this diet goes under many other names, for example: the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet , the Cleveland Clinic Diet, the Spokane Heart Diet, and the Miami Heart Institute Diet.)

The first priority is to deal with the problems the diet creates:

1) The diet claims that you can lose 10 pounds or more, in a single week. As expected, weight loss that occurs this quickly, is mostly water. Which means there's the danger that you will gain all the weight back, as soon as you go off the diet.

2) The diet is very low-calorie. As expected, this means that you cannot continue the diet for long periods - and certainly cannot follow it as a "healthy lifestyle"!

3) The diet is somewhat unhealthy (due to its severe restrictions) - but this problem can be reduced with the proper modifications to its "rules".

4) The very low-calorie nature of the diet, and it's food selections, cause frequent, unwanted "side effects". Diarrhea is the most widely reported. But also, weakness, light-headedness, dizziness - and even fainting! (The modifications mentioned in point 3 above, can also reduce these problems somewhat.)

Here is a brief outline of what it's like to follow the Sacred Heart Diet. (I will give you the full diet plan, including the main Soup Recipe, plus ways to deflect the "side effects", in the next article in this series - see below for details.)

The diet runs for 7 days. The main component is a "special" soup recipe, which can (and should) be eaten all 7 days. To that, is added a list of fluids, which are also allowed on every day.

On each of the 7 days, there are specific foods added to this base. (Different foods on each day.) Most of the additions, not surprisingly, are vegetables and fruits. However, there are days which also allow some definitely non-dietary additions: some starches, baked potato WITH butter, milk, beef, rice.

Despite these odd additions, the truth is, the Sacred Heart Diet is NOT easy. And it can be unpleasant - especially in its "side effects".
